The Story:
"Liberation is achieved through enjoyment. Happiness is gained through enjoyment. Therefore, by every effort, an accomplished practitioner should become an enjoyer. The wise man should always avoid blame, disgust or shame of the yoni."
-Yoni Tantra, Patala 6
Who knows what was or wasn't before the first vibration?
Some say it was the word, but who uttered it?
Everything we can imagine has a mother, and everything we can imagine is The Mother.
She is our mother, the mother of all nature, and she has given birth to the rainbows of colors and sounds, the bouquets of smells and sensations.
Indeed, it is She who gave birth to herself, and all her forms, including the ones of death and destruction.
These are the glorious veils of her dance, as real as she wants them to be, each worthy of worship and praise.
And may that praise be in joy, so RING MY BELL AND WAKE UP!
We have all the time in the world, and no time to waste! The Multiverse awaits, her golden gates pouring forth all the blessings into this one moment, where you and I are one, and we are dead, and we are unborn, and we are more alive than we could ever be.
The Why:
We are all born of a womb. Until, or if, human cloning happens, we all share that common ground zero. We also share the same endgame - we are all going to die. Remembering this is medicine. If we thought about these facts more often, perhaps we would stop to think before ostracizing someone differently abled, bodied or thinking. If we are "othered" ourselves, this awareness should offer peace and solace. These things are basic, but in the rush of daily routines, we get absorbed in insignificances. Perhaps this painting can serve as a reminder of our similarities, and an inspiration to overcome our adversities by embracing the embodied joys of a life devoted to love.
The What:
The archetype of death and the young woman has inspired countless artists over the centuries. I'm moved by its bittersweet contrast, the seemingly opposite aspects of life reminding us "it all shall pass." But - my young lady isn't be helpless in death's hands. Like Death she is a goddess, and she has no navel because she is unborn. Her hair is the firmament of the sky and her symbol is the crescent moon, symbolizing the mind. The two are riding a ram with bat wings. The ram is an animal of virility and fecundity, it's the go-getter, the pure will to live. The bat is an animal of the dark and intuition. And of course, the bell is the clitoris of the cosmic vulva they are emerging from, into the womb of our world.
The How:
Like most of my paintings, "Ring My Bell and Wake Up" started as a collage/sketch.. Initially, I laid in the outlines of the painting in pencil and thin acrylic, and then I began layering the oils and glazes. Some of the colors were mixed using powdered pigments and handmade oil medium. It's a time consuming and laborious process, but the brightness of the colors make it worth it. The background is in a style I've developed over the years by using complementary colors together and playing with their interaction to achieve the trippy eyegasm effect. Finally, I added the metal leaf. All in all, the painting took me a couple of months to complete.
FAQ:
-Are the colors as bright?
Yes, in fact they are very strong and light resistant. It's impossible to reproduce all colors faithfully on all screens. I have done my best to match the photograph to the painting. I use the best oil colors, and some colors are custom made by me using raw pigments and painting medium. This painting also contains metallic handcrafted paint.
-What is “gilding”?
It's a painstaking process of applying very thin sheets of metal to a surface to achieve a shiny finish. Traditionally gold was most popular. I've used contemporary gilding material in gold and bronze for this painting.
